Dear Prospective Art Student:

Thank you for inquiring about the art program at James Madison University.  The University has special admission requirements for those interested in studying the arts.  Please examine these requirements and the admission procedures described in the material enclosed.  Complete the enclosed School of Art, Design & Art History application and return it to the address listed.  All School of Art, Design & Art History applications are due on or before January 31, 2012.

Art majors may select courses from art history or one of many studio areas as indicated below.  They may elect to pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science, or Bachelor of Art degree.  Individual areas of interest in the BFA degree are graphic design, interior design or general fine arts.  All of our programs are accredited by either the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) or the Foundation for Interior Design Educational Research (FIDER).

JMU art faculty are true master teachers who collectively represent an exciting mix of emerging and established national and international reputations.  Art faculty members are dedicated to outstanding undergraduate teaching and are very active in their respective fields.

The Office of Financial Aid coordinates scholarships, grants, student employment, and loans.  Freshman scholarships of up to the full cost of tuition are awarded for outstanding portfolios chosen by faculty at the Portfolio Review Days.  In addition, awards are given each year to students recognized for high achievement and to those selected by the juror of the annual student exhibition.

If you are interested in attending JMU during the next school year, request an information booklet from the Admissions Office or visit the JMU website at www.jmu.edu.  The undergraduate application is available on-line or you may request a paper copy through the Admissions Office.  James Madison University is a popular school and admission is selective.  The application deadline is November 1, 2011 for "Early Decision" and January 15, 2012 for "Regular Decision".  Transfer students should check with the JMU Admissions Office for application deadlines.  Transfer students should also be aware that there is a separate application/portfolio review process for them through the School of Art, Design & Art History.  Please contact the art office for that application form and information.

If you would like more specific information about JMU's art programs, please log onto the School of Art, Design and Art History's website at www.jmu.edu/art/ or call 540-568-6216 or 540-568-6661.

Sincerely,
