FACULTY

Greg Stewart, Assistant Professor of Art, showed an abbreviated version of his project Tools for an Upright Animal: A Future Before it Happened at Dean Project in New York City recently. The project will be exhibited in its entirety at The Kuwaiti Art Foundation in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, this coming September.

Jamie Powell, Assistant Professor of Art, is in a group show entitled, Extra Virgin running March 12th - April 5th at FLUXspace in Philadelphia. Ms. Powell's work will also be featured in a two-person exhibition at Hello My name is Gallery in New Haven, CT in May.

Sang Yoon, Professor of Graphic Design, published two of her designs, the logo for the College of Visual & Performing Arts and a poster for the JMU Contemporary Music Festival, in the Creativity 36 Annual.
Professor Yoon also had her Complete Identity Systems for the Lakeview Golf Club selected for publication in the American Corporate Identity 24. It is a full-color and hardback collection of the best corporate identity design publication in America, and will be published by Collins Design in late 2008. She will receive Certificates of Design Excellence for her work.
Professor Yoon also received a Fulbright Scholar Grant to do research in South Korea. She traveled to South Korea in August for the Fall 2007 semester.

John Ott, Assistant Professor of American Art History, will have two essays published this year: “Labored Stereotypes: Palmer Hayden's The Janitor Who Paints," in the Spring 2008 issue of American Art, and “How New York Stole the Art Market: Blockbuster Auctions and Bourgeois Identity in Gilded Age America,” in the Summer/Autumn 2008 issue of Winterthur Portfolio.  This spring he will present papers at the “New Critical Perspectives on African American Art History” conference at the University of Maryland and at the “Cityscapes” conference at Case Western Reserve University.  JMU has nominated his proposal "Metropolitan, Inc.: Corporate Governance, Entrepreneurial Elites, and the Origins of American Art Museums" for consideration for an NEH Summer Stipend.

Bill Wightman, Associate Professor of Art and Art Education, received the 2007-08 "Higher Education, Art Educator of the Year Award" from the Virginia Art Education Association. Bill was nominated by K. Schwartz, and selected by the entire VAEA membership, during the annual conference in Williamsburg. Bill Wightman is recognized for "lively and engaging" state and national presentations, and for his contributions to the NAEA student membership. Bill was also nominated to the 2008-2010 VAEA Board of Directors.

Dawn Hachenski, Associate Professor of Graphic Design, had two of her designs selected for Identity: Best of the Best 2007, an international juried publication of logos, trademark, and corporate identity work.
She also
finished an artist book residency this summer at the Women's Studio Workshop in Rosendale, NY. Her book, "The Prairies" has already been purchased in 7 permanent collections: Yale University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth University,Vassar College, the Clark Art Institute in Massachusetts, and Indiana University.
"The Praries" was accepted into the AIGA DC 50 competition. The American Institute of Graphic Arts 50 competition is a biennial event that recognizes the top 50 designs over the past 2 years. The 50 were selected from over 500 submissions from Maryland, DC, Virginia and West Virginia. The book will be featured in a catalog as well as exhibited in Washington, DC. Mary Shira, Adjunct Professor of Art, received the top award for watermedia, the "Frank C. Wright Jr. Medal of Honor," at The American Artists Professional League's Seventy-Ninth Grand National Exhibition in New York City. The exhibition runs through November 16th 2007. She was also chosen as the poster artist for the 2007Montpelier Hunt Races.

Jamie Powell, Assistant Professor of Art, had a solo show entitled, "Jamie Powell: Recent Works," at McDonough Gallery, at Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio, where she will also participate as a Visiting Critic. The exhibition ran November 17 - December 14.

Sukjin Choi, Assistant Professor of Art, had her work exhibited at the Cavin-Morris Gallery, in New York City, in the show "Contemporary Ceramics & Japanese Patchwork." The Exhibition was up October 18, 2007 through November 24, 2007.
Sukjin Choi also had her work on display at the Franklin Street Gallery in Harrisonburg. The show ran November 2-December 17.
She also was included in the DaimlerChrysler Emerging Artist Award Exhibition, which opened October 6th in Berlin. The award is associated with the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Agnes Carbrey, Adjunct Professor of Art, showed JMU student work from her class projects at the SE College Art Conference in Charleston WV in a presentation titled, "Drawing Inspiration from the Human Form." She also participated as a panel member addressing the subject, "Figure Drawing: Pertinent or Passe?" Additionally, her review on the paintings of Philip Geiger and Robert Stuart will be published in the December SECAC Journal.

Lisa Tubach, Assistant Professor of Art, was selected for an exhibition at the Gallery 180 of the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago, October 8th – November 8th, 2007. Additionally, her work will be in an invitational exhibition at the Museum of Nebraska Art, March 15th – April 5th, 2008.

Mark Rooker, Assistant Professor of Art, had his piece “Entropus pseudoexorbitans debeerius” accepted for 500 Wedding Rings published by Lark Books.
He also participated in "PopArt" an exhibition of jewelry at Shaw Gallery, Northeast Harbor, ME, and is participating in the upcoming invitational exhibition, "Teapots", at Function+Art gallery, Chicago, IL.

Cole Welter, Professor of Art, had an exhibit, “Mixed Media,” on display October 8th – October 26th at the Kauffman Gallery at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania.

Richard Hilliard, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design and Illustration, will be at Barnes & Noble in Harrisonburg, VA for a book signing of his 3rd illustrated children's book, Ham the Astrochimp. The event will be on Friday, October 5th, 2007 at 7:00pm.

Trudy L. Cole, Professor of Graphic Design, has thirty-eight of her designs accepted for publication in “Big Book of Design Ideas #3.” The pieces were chosen from among thousands for inclusion in this national, hardback, book showcasing the best in graphic design. The book will go to press later this year, and will be published in early 2008.

Robert Bersson, Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History will have his work exhibited at Bridgewater College titled "Art and Society”. The show is politically and socially provocative, with subjects ranging from the Iraq Wars (1 and 2), Vietnam, prisoners in American jails, the American Dream and Flag, materialism, and, last but certainly not least, the 2000 CHANGE campaign for Harrisonburg City Council. The exhibition will run from September 3rd to October 5th at the Bridgewater College Library, Second Floor
Artist Talk/Reception: September 10th, 4-7PM.

Susan Zurbrigg, Associate Professor of Art, had her work exhibited at The Painting Center located in Soho, New York City. The show was curated by Vittorio Colaizzi and ran from June 19th through July 14th.  Susan Zurbrigg will also be a Visiting Artist at The University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth this May. She will be a guest reviewer at MFA semester-final critiques.

STUDENTS

Graphic Design students Nancy Daly, Kelly Goggins, Turner Hilliker, Brittany Hince, and Katie Hoehn won awards in the 2008 Real Show competition.

Paul Estabrook participated in the 2008 Virginia Council on Graduate Schools Graduate Student Research Forum. He presented the lecture, "What Remains: On Burnt Books, Honeycomb-embedded Photographs, Flickering TVs, Suspended Spheres, and other Alterations of Meaning." More Info

Lea Deglandon, Brady Schwendeman, and Rod Worden participated in three(2), a collaborative exhibition of student work. The exhibition included students from Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, and James Madison University, and was on display at The Student Gallery at Eastern Mennonite University November 5-25, 2007.

Nancy Daly participated in "Wearable Art X," at 1708 Gallery in Richmond, on November 10th.

Four graphic design majors, Sara Gwinn, Lindsay Jaworski, Tim Skirven, and Will Trible, were selected for the student design competition & exhibition "Flux" sponsored by American Institute Graphic Arts (AIGA) Blueridge Chapter and Shepherd University. Only 67 out of the 250 entries were accepted.

Paul Estabrook, MFA concentration in Photography, and Lauren Pack, BFA concentration in Photography, had their work accepted in the Due South, SPESE's first juried book of student photography in the Southeast. Alumni Exhibition at Sawhill Gallery
Ken D. Ashton, Chris Broz, Sanam Emami, Martha Keith, John M. Kim, Lindsay Krembs, sara ruel.bergeron, Gwyneth Scally, Lara Tomlin, Angie Wiggins, and Stephanie Williams recently participated in "Generation: School of Art and Art History Alumni Exhibition." The exhibit was featured as part of JMU’s Centennial Celebration.

Site Specific Wall Drawing at Artomatic 2007 – This drawing will be executed directly on the wall using graphite and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. The Drawing will be destroyed during demolition after Artomatic closes. 2121 Crystal Drive, Arlington VA. April 13-May 20, 2007. Opening Reception April 13, John will be there from 9:30 until 1 am after the AAC opening. (accessible from Crystal City Metro Station on Yellow and Blue Lines).

Millicent Young, MFA 1997 in sculpture, has exhibited her work in the 2005 Biennale Internazionale dell'Arte Contemporanea in Florence, Italy. Barabara Rose was one of the jurors for this exhibit.
