Field School in the American Southwest

In 2009, JMU will hold its fourth archaeological field school in the American Southwest.
This year's field school will return to the Salinas Pueblo Province in central New Mexico to investigate a series of large masonry pueblos occupied during the 13th and 14th centuries A.D. The field school is 5 weeks, from June 2nd to July 7th, and enrolled student will earn 6 credits.

Student participants will be trained in excavation, artifact analysis, and site mapping. Field trips include visits to Sandia Pueblo, Old Town Albuquerque, the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation, and other places of cultural interest.

The program costs include tuition, airfare to/from Albuquerque, and a fee of approximately $850 to cover meals, transportation, and field trips. Field school students must supply their own camping supplies (tent, groundcloth, sleeping bag).

All potential participants must apply through the Office of International Programs and complete an application supplement specific to the Southwest program. Applications are due March 6th and must be submitted to Julie Solometo's mailbox in 116 Sheldon Hall. Contact Matthew Chamberlin (chambema@jmu.edu) or Julie Solometo (solomejp@jmu.edu) for more information on the program, costs, and application process.
