Wood Duck — Aix sponsa

Order Anseriformes
Family Anatidae
Genus Aix
Species sponsa
The male is a highly colored duck with a greenish head and back and a chestnut chest. It has a bizarre face pattern, sweptback crest and rainbow iridescence making it one of the more attractive ducks. The female is dull colored with a dark crested head and a white eye patch. They are known to nest in tree hollows or nest boxes near wooded swamps, rivers or ponds.
