Note the white back! The Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are the only woodpeckers with white backs. They are nearly identical, but the downy is smaller, having a smaller body and bill. Both birds are checkered and spotted with black and white. The male has a red spot at the back of the head. The Downy is found in wooded areas, year round, throughout the Eastern United States.
