Downy Woodpecker — Picoides pubescens

Order Piciformes
Family Picidae
Genus Picoides
Species pubescens
Note the white back! The Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers are the only woodpeckers with white backs. They are nearly identical, but the downy is smaller, having a smaller body and bill. Both birds are checkered and spotted with black and white. The male has a red spot at the back of the head. The Downy is found in wooded areas, year round, throughout the Eastern United States.
