The JMU Alumni Association is now offering at least 10 programming grants of up to $500 each for official alumni groups! These funds may provide the total funding for a group’s program or event, or partial funding to lower costs to alumni, or they may broaden the reach or impact of the program or event.
Alumni Groups: to apply for a grant, simply fill out the electronic JMU Alumni Association Programming Grant Application and email it to Kevin Gibson or Alan Maynard. Once the grant application is received by the Office of Alumni Relations, your group will have a response within three weeks as to whether you will be awarded the grant funds.
For the Alumni Association’s budgetary purposes, the grant funds must be utilized for a program or event no later than June 30, 2011. Grant applications will be reviewed in the order that they are received, thus the sooner your chapter submits an application, the more likely you are to receive funds.
If you have any questions about the Alumni Chapter Programming Grants, please email Kevin Gibson or Alan Maynard.
Tampa Bay Alumni Chapter ($400): 2nd Annual Alumni Chapter Spring Barbecue Picnic scheduled for Saturday, April 9, 2011. Alumni, family, and friends of JMU are invited to attend. Local county park facilities will be used and the chapter will serve barbecue ribs and side dishes including vegetarian menu options. Relay races and other competition events will be planned in which JMU themed prizes will be used.
Student Government Association Alumni Chapter ($500): The Federal Lobbying Day and Reception will provide an opportunity for Alumni to join efforts with current students and support the existing SGA federal lobbying day that takes place each spring. The lobbying experience will allow for alumni and current students to meet with key Congress (wo)men and Senators to advocate on behalf of the interests of their fellow students and alumni. The meetings will serve as an opportunity for students and alumni to share personal stories and accounts for why specific legislative and policy issues should be passed or failed. The program enables members of the JMU community to be active participants in their democracy and have an effect on the passage or denial of laws that are of consequence to the JMU community.
The reception following the day of meetings will serve as a time of relaxation, socialization, celebration and networking. The reception will take place in a private room at the Hawk 'n' Dove Restaurant on Capitol Hill (329 Pennsylvania Ave., SE Washington, D.C. 20003) from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, where refreshments will be provided.
Marching Royal Dukes Alumni Chapter (up to $500): MRD Alumni return to campus each year for the last home football game. The group rehearses with the MRDs on Friday and Saturday then performs with the MRDs at Pregame and Halftime. Before the game they also host an Alumni Tailgate event where alumni can meet, greet and eat. This is great opportunity to reconnect with old friends, meet their families and build new relationships. The Alumni that return for this event range from recent grads back to the founding of the Marching Royal Dukes in the early 1970's.
Chicago Alumni Chapter ($500): Whirly Ball event in which alumni can have fun, be active, and meet new Dukes in the Chicagoland area. Will have a private room to play Whirly Ball and also access to food/drinks. This will hopefully bring some different people out to a Chicago Dukes event!
Harrisonburg Alumni Chapter ($500): HAC BBQ/Pig Roast that will be held similarly to the Richmond and DC Crabfests. The event will be family-friendly and will give JMU alumni an opportunity to return to JMU during the slower summer season. HAC hopes to turn this into an annual event.
Atlanta Alumni Chapter ($500): The Atlanta Chapter's Spring Picnic! This event will be held at an area park(TBA), and will feature BBQ along with adult beverages and soda/water. Activities will be fun for kids and adults alike, including frisbee, softball and a raffle.
Jacksonville Spirit City ($500): Grow the Jacksonville Dukes, has been an ongoing program to help fund social events and outings to connect the Jacksonville Spirit City with Jacksonville, FL. Some upcoming events will include a Holiday Party, JMU Women's Golf Tournament with Coach Mickey Matthews and a Charity Event, dont miss out!
