Leaving a Legacy
Thanks!
Your generous response to the call of the JMU
students manning the Madison Fund call center helped take us over
our goal of raising $5,000 this year for our new chapter
scholarship. We don't have much time to savor our success
as the new year brings a new goal of yet another $5,000 as we're on
our way to reaching full endowment in 3 more years! If you missed
the call or would otherwise like to donate to our scholarship,
which is intended to assist a student from our area attend
JMU, CLICK HERE and be sure to
enter "Tidewater" in the scholarship blank. On behalf of local
students in our area that will soon benefit from our scholarship,
THANK YOU!

Looking Forward to JMU's Centennial in 2008!
In four years JMU, established in 1908, will be celebrating its
Centennial. It's an exciting time for the University and alumni
alike as we expect to be 90,000 members strong by then! Like our
colleagues at older state institutions, our time has come to step
up and take ownership of the financial stability of our alma mater.
We've long given the excuses for our puny endowment as being a
young alumni association, but do you know just how bad it is?
JMU's endowment ranks 24th
out of 30 colleges and universities in the state, that's right,
6th from the bottom, behind lesser-known
names including Shenandoah University and Ferrum?! While its easy
to reason that the small donation I could afford wouldn't make a
difference, did you know that only 9% of all
JMU alums made a donation, of any size, last year?
Parent's, in the midst of paying tuition, and faculty, who haven't
gotten a raise in 3 years gave more than us, at 21% and 10%
respectively. Pretty embarrassing, huh!
Our Challenge
Consider for a moment the opportunities our JMU
experience gave us, and the generosity of unknown supporters
responsible for making the University what we were a part of. Let's
decide now to make a commitment to ensure quality education for
future students and even make a difference in the lives of a few
that might not otherwise be able to afford to attend. The Office of
Development has set a goal to have 35% of alumni annually giving by
2008. In Tidewater, our goal has been set to
raise $25,000 to endow a scholarship by JMU's Centennial.
Given the 4 years remaining, our chapter's challenge is to raise
$5,000 locally each of those years.
Take Ownership- Help Establish a
Chapter Scholarship for Tidewater Students
There are many ways you can be a part, truly a
partner, in the shaping and developing of the future through your
gifts and support of James Madison University. Your rewards will be
more than the tax savings. There are the personal, emotional, and
spiritual rewards of helping others. Helping others creates
cherished and tender moments that can't be duplicated in any other
way. If you have questions about our
scholarship, would like further details, or would like to make a
donation to the scholarship, please contact

Leave a Legacy
Continuous Learning from
Dr. Mark Warner
Any of you lucky enough to have had Dr. Warner for class? Better
yet, anyone from days long enough ago to remember him as an RA or a
classmate? Can you believe he's now the Senior Vice President for
Student Affairs?! He's still as entertaining as ever, challenging
each of us to see the world differently and to leave a LEGACY, as
he spells out below:
L LAUGH at yourself. Be serious about important
things but enjoy yourself along the way. Too many of us take life
too seriously!
E EDUCATE yourself. Have a desire to
continuously learn. The more we experience and learn, the richer
life becomes. Make sure your job is giving you opportunities to
contribute, learn something, and have fun, otherwise, starting
looking for a new one&life is too short!
G - GIVE from the heart, without condition, but
with "heart strings" attached. Aim to touch someone and make a
difference in another's life. Focus on what you can offer someone
else.
A Be an ALUM extraordinaire. Invest in Madison,
perpetuate what makes it great, and add to someone else's
experience.
C CHARACTER. We have the ability to lead people
and transform lives through our integrity. Integrity is when our
beliefs, our talk, and our actions all match up.
Y YOU! Don't lose the personal touch. Show
people that they are important, by learning their names and making
them feel like they count. Doing things with meaning and passion
and don't confine yourself to your job title&you are much more
than that!
