JMU's Rising Selectiveness
State colleges are already at maximum capacity and the number of
Virginia students wanting to go to college is expected to rise by
an additional 40 to 70 thousand in the coming years. Naturally, as
the number of applicants increases, the number turned down also
increases. Students with better academic records than their
grandparents, parents, or siblings that went to JMU aren't getting
in these days, which is a hard pill for many "legacies" to swallow.
Although JMU does use legacy status as a tie breaker in
the selection process, it is by no means a guarantee for admission
these days. Keeping in mind the tough competition to get admitted,
encourage the potential JMU legacy in your family to take a
challenging high school curriculum.
