Our chapter's goal is to keep the spirit of JMU alive in Richmond.
We strive to hold a variety of events that cater to everyone from those who have just graduated to those who are retired. Through our events, we want to continue to support JMU, as well as provide fun opportunities for our Richmond area alumni to get to know each other, or renew old JMU friendships. Please come to one of our monthly meetings or upcoming events and find out how to get involved.
Without you, there is no Alumni Association.
Chapter Meetings - Each monthly meeting will be on the first Tuesday of every month (except if it is a holiday) from 6:30-7:30 pm
*Tuesday, April 8th at Bottom's Up Pizza (WEST END)
We have structured this meeting to have 2 distinct parts. The first half-hour will include an update from our chapter President, Cutis Perry. The first half of the meeting is a great opportunity for any of YOU who want to come and "pitch" an idea to the chapter, whether it be for a social event, fundraising, or whatever! We are open to hearing about new and interesting ideas, and will try our best to incorporate them into our plans.
Following the update, we will break-up into committee groups (Service, Fundraising/Scholarship, Social, and Networking) and begin to focus on specific ongoing and future projects within each group. Leaders of each group will guide these discussions.
If you would like to get involved, please come join us and share your ideas! Pizza and non-alcoholic beverages are provided by the chapter.
SERVICE: Join the Richmond Dukes Monument 10K Team - Are you registered to run/walk in the Ukrop’s Monument 10K race? If so, it's not too late to join our Richmond Dukes 10K Team, and help us collect donations for the Massey Cancer Center! Our chapter knows how important it is to give back to the Richmond community, and we are excited to be involved in the Massey Team Challenge! We are still working hard to meet (and hopefully surpass) our goal of $5,000. However, we still need your help. Our team is open to any JMU alum and friend/family who would like to be involved. Click Here for more information.
SOCIAL: The social committee has booked Bar Louie in the Short Pump area (http://www.barlouieamerica.com/richmond.html) on March 27th from 6:00-9:00 pm for our next happy hour. Drink specials and appetizers will be provided! These social events are excellent opportunities to network and make new friends, and reconnect with old friends. We will also have information about upcoming chapter events. Hope to see many of you there! Also in the works is a VA Alumni Event, which will include all alums from VA schools (VA Tech, W&M, UR, UVA, etc.). This event will be in June at Toad's Place downtown, and will include live music! Stay tuned for more details. The committee is also exploring wine tasting opportunities in the area and hope to set something up for this summer! Please look for additional information about this year's "Diner with the Dukes" event that is put on by the Duke Club. It's going to be a great Spring event to get us all excited about the upcoming 2008/2009 season!
SCHOLARSHIP/FUNDRAISING: Our scholarship committee has been working hard to get everything organized for this year's application process. Scholarship applications went out last week to all rising Seniors from the Richmond area with a deadline in late March. The scholarship committee will review the applications in early April and select two recipients for $1,200 each. If your son/daughter is a rising Senior and did not receive this information, but would like to apply, please let us know and we will get the necessary application materials to you! On the fundraising front, if you are about to open up a new account with Suntrust Bank, you can have them donate $100 to the JMU Foundation and will be transferred to our chapter! This is an easy and wonderful way to help your alumni chapter raise scholarship money! Please look for additional information about the Carrie Kutner Family Weekend on April 12th! This is another great scholarship event held in Harrisonburg, which celebrates the memory of Carrie Kutner.
NETWORKING: The networking committee discussed the results from the Networking Survey. The survey was a great success. There were over 380 people who responded. Thank you to those of you who responded!!! The majority of people who responded would like to see most of the meetings in the West End. The best time to meet for majority of respondents was after work hours/dinner. The biggest benefit for people would be overall networking. The committee is looking into options for speakers and West end locations for their first networking event! Suggestions are always welcome, so if you have speaker or location ideas, please let us know!
