James Madison University Black Alumni Chapter

BAC Mentoring Program

Check out the Fall 2007 Pathways to Success Newsletter!

The Black Alumni Chapter Mentoring Committee is in need of alumni to serve as mentors. As a mentor, we are looking for interested persons to reach out to current students and foster positive relationships that will ultimately assist with the retention and matriculation of African American students enrolled at JMU.

The structure of the mentoring program is such that each mentor will be paired with a junior or senior. Early in the mentoring relationship, the mentor will interact with this upperclass student to assist her/him with the job search process or preparing for graduate school. After the mentee graduates, this student will be encouraged to become a mentor to support a JMU sophomore or junior who is interested in participating in the mentoring program.

The duties of the BAC mentor may include, but are not limited to:

  • Guiding the mentee in developing academic and career goals,
  • Answering general questions about your undergraduate experience at JMU,
  • Providing an opportunity for your mentee to shadow/visit you for a day on your job, and
  • Facilitating the student's overall growth and development.

Please take a moment to fill out our Interest Sheet, as you will be paired according to your background and interest. Please email your interest sheet to Melanie Hayden.

If you have questions about the mentoring program, please feel free to contact Melanie.

Thanks for your help!
