Frequently
Asked Questions...
Q:
How long do I have to buy a brick?
A: Annual requests and payments
received before December 31, will be installed the following April.
Q:
Is my gift tax-deductible?
A: Yes!
Q:
When will I receive confirmation of my payment?
A: Receipt
of your gift will be confirmed immediately upon receipt. We plan to
do a mailing closer to the engraving of the bricks to insure we have
all of your information right.
Q:
I thought the Class of 2000 was the only group
of alums that would be able to purchase bricks. How come bricks are
available to ALL alums?
A: All alums may purchase a brick
for the new alumni center, however, the Class of 2000 holds the distinction
of having its own grouping TOTALLY dedicated to their class. No other
classes enjoy that privilege.
Q:
Can I buy a brick as a present for someone
else?
A: Yes.
Q:
Can I buy a brick for someone who is a current
student but who has not graduated?
A: Yes.
Q:
Can I buy a brick for a "future Duke?"
A: Yes.
Q:
How much space do I have on my brick/paving
stone/benefactor listing?
A: Bricks will contain three lines of text with 15
spaces per line, to include spaces. Paving stones will contain
four lines of text with 16 spaces per line, to include spaces. Leeolou
Alumni Center Benefactor listings will contain the individual or
couple name.
Q:
Can I request more than one name on a brick?
A: It is not recommended. Bricks
allow spacing for one name and class year and should be consistent in
content and format as the other bricks that will be paved. Please note
that the university reserves the right to alter names and messages to
comply with engraving guidelines.
Q:
Can I request more than one name on a paving
stone?
A: Yes. Paving stones allow for
the name of an individual, a couple, a family, an organization, etc.
and a brief message.
Q:
What if my brick is spelled wrong?
A: We will send you verification
of what is to go on your brick before it is engraved. If the University
makes an error after we have received final confirmation from you we
will reengrave the brick.
Q:
I plan on making a gift of $500. If my employer
matches it, am I entitled to be a Leeolou Alumni Center Benefactor or
do I get just a paving stone?
A: Yes, it will count as a Benefactor
gift.
Q:
The Pave the Way brochure states that my donation
will be used to fund "alumni programs." What do you mean by "alumni
programs?"
A: Pave the Way proceeds are being
used to first furnish the public spaces of the Alumni Center in an appropriate
manner. Any monies left will go into the University endowment earmarked
alumni programs which help undergrad chapter activities, special events
etc.
Q:
Can I use punctuation such as hyphens,
apostrophes and ampersands on my brick? Ex: My mom graduated in 1969
and there won't be enough room for the year but "'69" could work.
A: We will standardize how we distinguish
class years per the Pave the Way engraving guidelines.
Q:
My husband and I want to put our bricks to
be placed side by side. Can you do that?
A: No. We cannot guarantee that
bricks can be placed together. You do, however, have the option to purchase
a Paving Stone, a 1' x 1' stone that will be predominantly displayed
in the Center's upper terrace, which will allow for more engraving space.
Please specify if you would like paving stones to be placed together.
Q:
How will I know where to find my brick once it is placed?
A: Bricks will be placed on the
WWII
Memorial Garden Terrace
of the alumni center and will be placed in random order. We are looking
into the possibility of having a map created to help alums to locate
bricks.
Q:
If my brick should be damaged or wear out,
will I be notified and do I have to pay to replace it?
A: In the unlikely event that your
brick will be damaged or destroyed, provision will be made to replace
it.
Q:
Is it possible that you will run out of bricks?
A: Plans allow for us to expand
our walkway if needed.
