From the President...

Remarks by Jon Offley, JMU Alumni Association President
As presented at the Main Centennial Event, March 14, 2008

For more than 95 years, students have graduated from this great institution and have changed the world because of their experiences here. Alumni have flown into space, delved the depths of the oceans to have new discoveries of species, saved lives, won Super Bowls, been recognized by the President of the United States, created companies, held judge ships, authored best sellers, been part of Nobel Prize winning organizations, served the United States in every war since World War II, participated in the Olympics, and won awards beyond numbering.

Our alums have also taught, both formally in the education system, and informally, in life. Madison has produced award winning teachers at the local, state and national levels. Our alumni have taught in schools, in colleges and universities, in seminaries, in medical schools, in law schools, in churches, temples and mosques. James Madison University alumni teach, whether or not teaching is their chosen profession. They reach out to their fellow citizens and the rest of the world community in many ways. They counsel, they travel the world to teach and serve, they serve the underprivileged, they help where help is needed, and they do not stop. Our alumni not only change the world, they teach others to change the world.

As we celebrate this institution's 100th birthday, I am honored to represent all alumni of the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg, the State Normal School for Women at Harrisonburg, the State Teacher’s College at Harrisonburg, Madison College and James Madison University.
