Kris Juncker, assistant professor of art history, came to JMU from Vassar College in 2007. She earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University as a specialist in African and African diasporic art history. Her research examines the expression of African religious arts tradition in the Caribbean, and she has conducted extensive fieldwork in Cuba and Puerto Rico. She is currently working on a book project titled “Honey at the Crossroads: Four Women and Afro-Cuban Ritual Arts, 1899-1969.” In her book, she examines the art and altars created by four women who worked as priests of Santería and Espiritimo in Cuba and Spanish Harlem. Dr. Juncker is interested in museum and curatorial studies concerning the display of Non-Western art. She will be leading JMU’s summer abroad program in Ghana in 2008 with fellow Africana Studies faculty, Drs. David Owusu-Ansah and Lamont King. |
