Graduation and Degree Requirements

You are in the main content

Degree Requirements

There are eight different undergraduate degree programs at JMU. The type of degree a student earns is largely determined by his or her major. It is important to know which type of degree a student is earning since the requirements for individual degree programs vary widely. Most courses used to satisfy degree requirements are embedded within requirements for the major with the exception of the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degrees.

JMU Degree Programs

  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (B.B.A.)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.)
  • Bachelor of Individualized Study (B.I.S.)
  • Bachelor of Music (B.M.)
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.)
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.)
  • Bachelor of Science in Social Work (B.S.W.)

Foreign Language Requirement

Foreign Language is required at JMU for the following programs:

Foreign Language Placement Exam

If students have taken two or more years of a foreign language in high school, and they wish to continue their study of the same language at JMU, and they did not take the SAT II exam in that language, then they are required to take the JMU Foreign Language Placement exam.

Refer to the foreign language placement exam website for important information about placement into foreign language courses at JMU.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science Degrees

Some majors give students the option of earning either a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of Science degree.  It is important to know the type of degree being earned and the differences between the BA and BS degree options.
