General Education: JMU's Core Curriculum

Overview

General Education: The Human Community is JMU's core curriculum that all students complete. The curriculum includes those courses that represent the best of a strong liberal arts education and help you develop competencies in writing, communication, critical thinking, and analytical and quantitative reasoning. It provides a multidisciplinary approach to study in the arts, humanities, social sciences and health and wellness.

General Education is the foundation from which you expand your knowledge and skills with more focused and in-depth study in the major. For this reason, the majority of the courses you will take your first two years at JMU are General Education courses along with a few major courses. All students complete 41 credit hours to fulfill General Education requirements.

General Education information in this section of the academic advising website is designed to provide you with a brief overview of requirements. You should also check the General Education website for more information.

General Education Cluster Requirements

General Education requirements are organized by clusters; each cluster has a specific theme and learning objectives. You must fulfill all requirements in each individual cluster.

Cluster One: Skills for the 21st Century

Cluster Two: Arts and Humanities

Cluster Three: The Natural World

Cluster Four: Social and Cultural Processes

Cluster Five: Individuals in the Human Community
