Academic Adviser Assignments

New Freshmen
All new freshmen are assigned to an academic adviser based upon the major you declare via the orientation One Book website.

     - Declared majors are advised by a faculty freshman adviser.
     - Honors Program Scholars are advised by an Honors adviser through your first semester at JMU.
     - Undeclared freshmen are advised by an adviser in Career and Academic Planning who can assist you with making
       informed decisions about a major.
     - Undeclared student athletes are advised by staff in Student Athlete Services through their first semester at JMU.

Freshman advising is coordinated by the office of Career and Academic Planning located in Wilson Hall, room 301.

New Transfer Students
Academic advising for new transfer students is coordinated by the office of Major Advising Programs located in Wilson Hall, room 102. New transfer students who have completed at least 30 or more transfer credit hours must declare a major upon matriculation and are advised by a faculty member in their major department.

New transfer students who have less than 30 transfer credits are advised by an adviser in Career and Academic Planning if they are undeclared, or by a faculty member in their major department if they have declared a major upon matriculating to JMU. See JMU's Academic Advising Structure, click here.

Declared Majors
All currently enrolled JMU students who have declared a major are advised by a faculty member from their major department including second semester freshmen and new transfer students. See JMU's Academic Advising Structure, click here.
