Each Adult Degree Program student is
assisted in creating an individualized program which incorporates a professional
core concentration of at least 30 hours and includes all elements necessary for
earning a degree.
Graduate Pat Trella designed her concentration
in Human Resource Development.
A concentration may not be named the same as
an existing JMU major unless
all course work required for the major is included in the individualized program
and completed satisfactorily. At least 24 credit hours of the concentration must
be upper division courses (junior/senior level). Certain concentrations may
require students to demonstrate competency in a common body of knowledge which
may require course work or testing beyond the 30 credit hours.
Each BIS major is required to complete a BIS
498 or 499 Senior Project for three to six credit hours with a minimum grade of
C. The BIS project will be an analysis of a work-related or cross-disciplinary
study directly related to the student's concentration or field of study. The
topic is to be identified by the student with the faculty adviser's help early
in the program. The completed project should reflect knowledge, skills and
abilities acquired from studies since beginning the Adult Degree Program. The
project will be evaluated by the faculty member supervising the study. The topic
of the study is subject to advance approval by the program director. Students
will enroll in BIS 498 before completion of the project and after attaining
senior status. Prior arrangements for the course enrollment must be made with
the program director.
Students in the Adult Degree Program may elect
to earn a Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS), Bachelor of Arts (BA), or
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. Students who earn a BS or BA degree still
develop an individualized program of study, but must meet the general
education requirements for those degrees.
The general education requirements for Adult
Degree Program students earning the BIS major is more flexible than that of
traditional students. BIS majors must complete a minimum of 41 credit hours in
general education areas of social and behavioral science, humanities, natural
science, mathematics, written and oral communications and US History.
Other program information is available in the BIS
rules.
