BIS Courses


BIS 200A  --Career and Life Planning /Stensby-Hurst 
 
Recommended, Not required     1 credit            Students explore individual interests and aptitudes and compare the results with careers.  

On-line BIS 200A --Career and Life Planning /Larson  
Recommended, Not required     1 credit      Students explore individual interests and aptitudes and compare the results with careers. Course available via the Internet.  Registration information may be obtained by e-mailing the BIS Administrative Assistant

BIS 200B --Program Development /Curry 
Required: 1 credit            Students complete a JMU application, develop a concise autobiography addressing educational and professional background, design an individualized program of study, containing a General Education component and a 30 hour (minimum) concentration, select an advisor in the concentration area. 

On-line BIS 200B  Program Development  /Puckett 
Required: 1 credit             Course available via the Internet.  Objectives are the same as BIS 200B above.  Registration information may be obtained by e-mailing the BIS Administrative Assistant.

BIS 200C--Portfolio Development /Curry 
 Required to submit experiential learning portfolio: 1credit            Students examine experiential learning, complete worksheets, knowledge test, and create sample portfolio in one learning component area.

BIS 200D--Computer Literacy /Miller 
Required for students who do not have technology competency:    1 credit          Students will learn computer fundamentals, create and edit documents, learn to use the campus e-mail and network systems, create classroom presentations and develop a web page.

BIS 200F -- Student Services 
This course will cover the student’s introduction to the campus; its services, resources and facilities, assist with academic planning, and help students develop realistic career and personal goals. 

BIS 250---Service Learning
1-6 credits, repeatable            Individualized Study majors may prepare a portfolio-learning component in Service Learning.  The documented service learning will be assessed by the Center for Service Learning and credit awarded as appropriate.  Prerequisite:  Request for service learning must be made though the portfolio process. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.

BIS 290---Special Study
3 credits, repeatable            Student selects instructor (advisor often serves), designs and completes independent study. Prerequisite:  Approval of BIS advisor and BIS director. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.

BIS 300---Employer Sponsored Learning
1-6 credits, repeatable        Student selects instructor (advisor often serves), designs and completes independent study. Prerequisite:  Approval of BIS advisor and BIS director. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.

BIS 450---Cooperative Learning
1-6 credits, repeatable            Two or more upper level Individualized Study majors may elect to do a cooperative study in a selected interdisciplinary area related to their individualized program, under the supervision of a faculty advisor or faculty member in the appropriate department/school. Prerequisite:  Approval of BIS advisor and BIS director. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.


BIS 490---Special Study 

3 credits, repeatable           Student selects instructor (advisor often serves), designs and completes independent study. Prerequisite:  Approval of BIS advisor and BIS director. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.

BIS 498---Senior Project or BIS 499---Honors Senior Project
(BIS 498 or 499 is required) 3 to 6 credits            Capstone Honors project within the area of concentration completed over 2 semesters.  Completed when student has 90 credit hours (senior level).  For 499, student applies with Honors Program (Hillcrest House (540) 568-6310) and if accepted, follows Honors Program guidelines to select Honors Committee (normally includes advisor), designs and completes independent study. Prerequisite:  Approval of BIS advisor and BIS director. Student must fill out appropriate paper work and return to the ADP office at least 2 weeks before the student registers.
