Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What if I have a class and will be late for a time slot?
A: Please try and sign up a time slot that you will not be late for. We understand that there are classes in session and you will not be excused from class. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer throughout the entire day.
Q: What if someone doesn't relieve me of my post at the end of my session and I have to leave?
A: If you need to leave your post to attend class or for some other reason, do not hesitate. You can presume that your replacement will be a few minutes late.
Q: Can I help out without being in a specific location at a specific time?
A: Yes. As you are walking around campus throughout the day, we encourage you approach people and ask if they have questions. They may not stop to ask you. They will appreciate you taking a minute or two out of your day to make theirs better!
Q: What do I wear?
A: You should wear your PURPLE Choices T-Shirt and remember, you're never fully dressed without a smile
Q: How, where and when can I give a tour?
A: Tour Guides are in high demand at several points during the day. You will have the opportunity to give mini tours of campus from Wilson Hall. These tours will run every 15 minutes from 10:30 to 1:30 . This is a great break in the day for many visitors and they are eager to see campus.
Q: What if it snow/rains?
A: If there is inclement weather, we ask that you come out with an even stronger presence and a bigger smile. This will help compensate for the poor conditions for our guests. Snow. There still will be programming if there is snow. The program will be on a smaller scale. Stay in touch with the volunteer website for specific instructions.
Q: Who do I email with any questions regarding my responsibilities?
A: If you have any questions once you have been assigned a team leader, they will be your first point of contact. If your question still remains, email choices@jmu.edu.
Q: Can I sign up for more than one location?
A: Yes. You may sign up and are encouraged to sign up for as many locations as you would like! Remember, even if you are not signed up for a specific time, you can help as you are walking around campus as well.
Q: What if I have already been a CHOICES Volunteer, do I still need to go to training?
A: Yes. You still need to come to training. This will be a good chance to refresh your mind on things you may have forgotten since last year as well as give you the best opportunity to sign up for the time slots and locations you desire most.
