Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if I volunteered for CHOICES last year - do I still need to go to a training session?
A: Yes, you still need to attend a training session. This is the only way you can sign up for a volunteer time and location. CHOICES changes a little every year and we need you to be familiar with the current program. The training will also be a great refresher for the things you may have forgotten since last year. If you volunteered for the February CHOICES and want to help again in April, you will be contacted by the CHOICES Volunteer Coordinators to sign up for a volunteer location (you do not need to attend another training).
Q: What if I have a class and will be late for a time slot?
A: Please try and sign up for a time slot that you will not be late for. We understand that there are classes in session and you will not be excused from class. There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer throughout the entire day.
Q: What if someone doesn't relieve me of my post at the end of my session and I have to leave?
A: If you need to leave your post to attend class or for some other reason, do not hesitate. You can presume that your replacement will be a few minutes late.
Q: Can I sign up for more than one location?
A: Yes. You may sign up and are encouraged to sign up for as many locations as you would like! Remember, even if you are not signed up for a specific time, you can help as you are walking around campus as well.
Q: Can I help out without being in a specific location at a specific time?
A: Yes. As you are walking around campus throughout the day, we encourage you to approach people and ask if they have questions. They may not stop to ask you. They will appreciate you taking a minute or two out of your day to make theirs better!
Q: What do I wear?
A: You should wear a PURPLE JMU t-shirt or sweatshirt and your CHOICES Volunteer button. Make sure to sport plenty of JMU spirit!
Q: What if it snows and/or rains?
A: If there is inclement weather, we ask that you come out with an even stronger presence and a bigger smile. This will help compensate for the poor conditions for our guests. Snow. There still will be CHOICES programming if there is snow. The program will be on a smaller scale. Check your email for specific instructions.
Q: Whom do I email with any questions regarding my responsibilities?
A: The CHOICES Volunteer Coordinators (two JMU Admissions staff members) will be your first point of contact. You can email them at CHOICESvolunteer@gmail.com.
