Information Technology Task Force
November 22, 1999
1. Review of past meeting notes, DRAFT Statement and Academic
Council Memo.
The task force members reviewed the meeting notes and found no changes. The
DRAFT Statement was reviewed and a decision was made to consolidate the second
section into two parts from three. It was also discussed that the words "centers"
and "interdisciplinary" would be added to the DRAFT.
2. How do we solicit ideas from campus community?
It was suggested that we could have each member of the task force survey his/her
college to get the inventory of It related academic activities. We also discussed
a definition of IT. The discussion centered on a definition by example or a
matrix of items to determine if an activity had a significant IT component.
It was decided that we would offer a first cut list to the chair of a list of
IT sectors to aid in the definition. We would also offer a matrix by function
and a dictionary definition. The chairs will wordsmith these and post them for
review.
3. What survey instrument would we use to gather information?
We discussed the web board, email and paper as possibilities for the instrument.
We also discussed the questions and responses expected. It was decided that
we would use an email for the initial solicitation and it would contain a URL
to a short list of three or four questions and a place for suggestions about
IT related academic activities. Each task force member present would email two
questions to the chair by December 3. If these were WORD attachments it would
make rewriting easier. It was also decided that we would use the word electronic
information instead of the word digital. The results of this survey would be
posted on the web board for the community to see and review and the task force
would use it to develop recommendations.
4. Next task force meeting - December 15, 1999, 2pm in ZSH 622
