Health and Human Services Task Force Meeting Minutes
October 19, 1999

Attendance: Vida Huber (Chair); Craig Abrahamson, Herb Amato, Cheryl Beverly, Cory Cleland, David Cockley, Jean Dalton, Lennis Echterling, Janet Gloeckner (absent), Judith Holt, Robert Koslow (Recorder), Jeffrey Kushner, Eric Nickel, Brenda Ryals (absent), Bill Walker

* Each committee member was introduced.

* Dr. Huber opened the meeting by explaining the charge of the committee.

* The task Force will represent a cross-college effort that will make recommendations about the direction of health and human service programs within JMU.

* The committee was urged to think outside of traditional boxes and existing walls.

* All areas of academia are within the purview of the committee (majors, minors, centers, research, linkages, etc.).

* A web site is being created for the committee. This site will serve as an avenue to provide information for and interchange with the JMU community.

The floor was open for discussion. Topics of discussion included information sharing, determining HHS- related areas within and outside the University, creating faculty profiles, determining the barriers affecting multidisciplinary activities, resource sharing, and program and college structure. After considerable exploration of ideas, the committee decided to create a list of initial tasks. This discussion lead to the formation of the following sub-committees:

1. Identification of common themes from the initial Health and Human Services Forum. (Amato, Dalton, Beverly)

2. Identification of Current HHS trends external to JMU. (Abrahamson, Cockley)

3. Identification of all of the HHS- related organizations, programs, etc. within JMU. (Walker, Kushner)

4. Collecting all of the pieces of the puzzle. (Holt, Echterling)
