Open Faculty Forum
Vida gave a summary of the Open Forum from 11/22/99. Although there were few participants external to the Task Force, the discussion was valuable. The summary of the SWOT Analysis (from the Forum) was distributed and discussed.
It was decided to post several tentative outputs from the Task Force on the web-site.
· External Trends (as amended below)
· SWOT Analysis (after discussion, decided NOT to post until clarified - see below)
The External Trends document from the sub-committee was discussed and amended. Recommended additions will be inserted in the document before posting. Craig Abrahamson and David Cockley will amend the External Trends report.
· To be Added:
· Increased community-based programs stemming from the aging demography
· Shift to more "integrated / wholistic / complimentary / alternative" health care models
· Continued importance of Health Promotion in all aspects of life
· A more active and health-conscious health care consumer
· Add a New Separate Section on Expected Trends in Academic Programs
· To be Deleted
· In the Introductory paragraph, delete the limitation to JMU as an undergraduate institution
Vida requested that Task Force members review the SWOT Analysis from the Forum and craft the entries to be clearer to public readers. Suggested changes should be submitted to Vida prior to the next task force meeting.
Subcommittee Reports
Cory Cleland updated the Task Force on the status of the Neuroscience major. Bill Walker reported on the subcommittee's draft of a letter to JMU faculty/staff to identify health and human services programs throughout the university. It was decided NOT to send the letter/email but to compile the data in other ways.
It was decided that a more expedient way was to have a student compile the programs, majors and minors listed at JMU through both the undergraduate and graduate catalogues. Janet Gloeckner agreed to have a student assigned to this.
Eric Nickels was requested to review and list relevant clubs and initiatives provided through the University Recreation Center.
Where to Go From Here
There was much discussion on whether the Task Force should seek further data or begin articulating the data received into realistic recommendations. Several alternative ways of categorizing the recommendations faced by the Task Force were noted. After extensive discussion it was decided that:
· Each Task Force member is to review the Health and Human Services task force documents to date and develop (in writing) a framework for Task Force recommendations. Multiple hard copies are to be prepared for the Task Force by January 6th. (drafts by Vida Huber "Program Areas for Potential Recommendations" and David Cockley "Memo - HHS Task Force Thoughts" were noted as suitable starting points)
· A concentrated work meeting will be scheduled the week before the spring semester (January 6th or 7th) to seek agreement on the framework for potential Task Force recommendations and to further develop these areas.
The next meeting will be the concentrated work meeting either January 6th or 7th. Task Force members should plan for a half-day working session.
