Health and Human Services Task Force Minutes
11/16/99

I. Minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

II. Update:

a) Vida distributed a copy of the Academic Council Criteria for Potential Programs.
b) The Task Force open forum is scheduled for Monday, 11-22-99, @ 4:00 in the CFW room.
c) The Task Force goal statement is now on the web site.
d) An email message about the open forum was sent to all faculty members.
e) Information from all task forces may appear in the Breeze.

III. Open Forum Agenda:

1. Update
2. Share recommendations
3. Invite responses
4. Invite new recommendations
5. Identify SWOT

IV. Recommendations to the committee ( from the JMU community)

1. Genetics program
2. Health Informatics
3. Health Ethics
4. Bilingual program in HHS
5. Neuroscience program
These ideas came from individuals from other colleges within JMU.

V. Sub-committee report: A handout describing "current trends" was distributed.

VI. Modular Building Update: Plans are moving rapidly. Vida provided a 1996 document from HHS that addressed the concept of a HHS Center.

VII. Brainstorming:

1. We need to continue to be thinking from an inter- and cross-disciplinary approach.
2. Expansion may not be the only approach. How can we take what we have and make it better?
3. We need to make specific recommendations to the administration. Follow up activities will be easier if we have specific recommendations.
4. We need to define the mission of HHS.

a) Distinctive characteristics of our programs

· multi-disciplinary experiences in clinical settings
· adopt-a-family concept during years 3-4
· service components

b) Distinctive characteristics of our students

· What separates our students from other HHS students?
· What do we want our students to look like?
· What experiences do we want to require of all HHS students?
· Do we want to block a weekly time when all students are free?

c) Distinctive service activities

· Shared values and beliefs as a common framework

d) Distinctive scholarship characteristics

· Establishment of a research/scholarship center where faculty and students can go for help, as well as coordination and dissemination of HHS scholarship.

e) Distinctive characteristics of our faculty

· How do we want to define teaching, scholarship and service?

f) Establish an information center for HHS

· Web site(s)
