Education at JMU

We produce more teachers each year than any other Virginia college or university.

In fact, educating teachers for Virginia schools was one reason the Virginia General Assembly established our school in 1908. We continue that tradition of excellence today.

Our teacher licensure candidates are highly sought after. Our graduates have gone on to win state, regional and national awards--the National Teacher of the Year and the Milken Educator Award just to name a few. And they have changed countless lives along the way.

Even before undertaking traditional student-teaching assignments, our field-based approach to teacher preparation puts our students in the classroom working with real teachers and real school children, all under the watchful eye of JMU professors. We are all about getting you out into schools so that you can put into practice what you learn in the classroom.

Preparing excellent teachers is our tradition, our goal, our passion.
