Analysis of Mobile DNA Elements Containing Methicillin Resistance Genes Discovered in Viruses from Environmental Samples in the Shenandoah Valley: a Partnership between JMU and VCU

The goal of this collaborative project is to use expertise available at two different Virginia universities to address the questions of incidence and mechanism of antibiotic resistance gene transfer between bacteria in nature. The proposed work will build on a pilot study conducted in an advanced ISAT research class at JMU in 2012, followed by 4-VA funded collaborative work between JMU students and a clinician and a graduate student at VCU on these research questions. Methods were developed by undergraduate researchers to extract bacterial viruses form a variety of environmental samples. The requested funding will support Dr. Temple and Dr. Buck’s ultimate goal of determining how common the gene is in nature and how similar the genes are, and to confirm that the genes are contained in DNA of bacterial viruses.
