This is a collaborative research proposal that will develop and increase the research capacity for both Dr. Constantin's and Dr. Hopkins' research groups. In addition, this grant will facilitate summer employment opportunity for three JMU undergraduates, 1.5 UVA undergraduates, and an UVA graduate student to conduct research on this project. One of the JMU undergraduate will be working in the lab of Dr. Hopkins. The students involved will be exposed to a wide variety instruments including a state-of-the-art laser system, built for time domain thermo-reflectance measurements. The research data obtained over the course of the summer 2013 will be used as preliminary data for applying to external funding at National Science Foundation (NSF) and other available funding agencies. This collaboration will enhance JMU's ability to motivate students to pursue an advanced degree in physics and engineering.
